CHAPTER THIRTY

The next morning, when I forced my eyes open, my skin broke out in goosebumps. I grabbed the comforter, drawing it up to my neck.

Raindrops pelted the windows as I reached for my phone. Why was I awake at six-thirty A.M.? And why didn’t Will ever respond to my text or phone call?

A memory bubbled up of Will when my mom passed. He’d stuck by my side like glue in the days leading up to the funeral. After it was over, I asked him and Whitney some specific questions about their parents’ car accident and they both became distant. Of course, they made certain I had a place to live, but talking about past pain was challenging for them. To this day I didn’t know how their grandparents died.

In the distance, I heard the patter of footsteps. Caroline was already stirring. As I hauled myself upright, there was a knock on my door.

“Come in,” I called.

Caroline peeked her head in. “Hey, uh . . . Max is downstairs. I think it’s serious.”

“What’s he doing here so early?”

“He won’t tell me. He said he has to talk to you directly. It’s urgent.”

“Okay. I’ll be right there. Man, it’s freezing.”

“I know. I’ll start the coffee and crank up the heat.”

“Thanks . . . oh, and Caroline? Whatever Max has to say, he can say it to both of us. If he has more bad news, I don’t want to be alone.”

“You got it,” she replied and shut the door.

My mind wandered to the most horrible places as I got dressed. What if something happened to Will? Maybe that’s why he didn’t call me back. Oh, God, I couldn’t bear to live in a world without Will Brown.

I barreled downstairs with my heart racing and found Max standing at the bottom of the steps.

“Max, what’s going on? Is someone else hurt? Please tell me Will is okay.”

His grim expression terrified me. “Uh . . . this isn’t about your boyfriend.”

Relief swept over me. “Then, what happened? Why are we standing here? Let’s go sit.”

“I forgot my umbrella. I don’t want to get Caroline’s house all wet. This won’t take long.”

Caroline came from the kitchen with a tray. “Max we can sit in the dining room. I’ve got coffee.”

“I’ll take a towel or two if you have it,” he said in an official tone.

Caroline rested the tray down on the table. “Of course. You must be chilled to the bone.”

“Thanks. Much obliged for the coffee.”

As Caroline hurried upstairs, I poured the coffee and took a seat. “Please tell me this isn’t about Whitney or Brian either.”

“It’s not, but I wanted you to hear this from me before the press got a hold of it.”

“Max, you’re scaring me. Please, just say it.”

“It’s about Bernie. He was in custody last night. My buddy Vince came and questioned him about Simone. It didn’t go well.”

“What do you mean?” I asked. “Actually hold that thought. I want Caroline to hear this too.”

She scurried into the room with two towels.
